2019 Memorial Day Service

2019 Memorial Day Service

May 27th at Claquato Cemetery, on a beautiful sunny morning, nearly 175 of us gathered for our annual Memorial Day Service. Early that morning scouts from troop 373 placed flags on every veterans grave throughout the cemetery.

At 10:30, as the program began, Post 2200 Veterans of Foreign Wars presented the colors .

Veterans Memorial Museum Director, Chip Duncan, introduced Miss Lewis County, Rebecca Ford, Who sang our National Anthem and later God Bless America.

Guest Speaker, Col. Ron Averill, who served two tours in Vietnam, gave an excellent Memorial Day message. Col. Averill’s spoke of the history of Memorial Day and his message included excerpts from President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address that were still relevant and fitting for today.

Organizations, Service Clubs and individuals were invited to lay wreaths at the base of the flagpole in remembrance of all who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Afterwards, at the Veterans Memorial Museum, Hamburgers and hotdogs were grilled by museum volunteers on our new mobile mess haul, and as always, our gallery and gift shop were open. Many visitors took this opportunity to see the recent addition of our P-51 Mustang and to stroll through our remarkable exhibits.

At 2:00 p.m. the Tree of Life service began in our gallery where dog tags were hung and candles lit honoring and remembering family and friends who gave service to our great nation.
