This year’s Memorial Day service will be at 10:30 a.m. at Claquato Cemetery, 142 Stearns Road, Chehalis, on Monday, May 29th. Kim Roller and Matt Murphy will explain what Veterans Day means to them. Then at 2 p.m., there will be the Veterans Tree of Life celebration at the Veterans Memorial Museum, 100 SW Veterans Way, Chehalis. The names and service record of veterans who have died will be recited. This will be followed by a benefit concert by the Westminster Presbyterian Bell Choir of Chehalis. For more information on the Tree of Life celebration or to order a dog tag for a veteran who has died, call 360-740-8875. Dog tags are $50. Two speakers, each from a different perspective, are scheduled this year. On September 14, 2009 Matt Murphy, while leading his squad of nine in Afghanistan, lost not only his leg due to and IED but also two of his buddies during the attack. Matt will share what Memorial Day means to him. The second speaker, Kim Roller, who never served in the military, became passionate after reading about the men who lost their lives during the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in WWII. Kim, an airline stewardess, travels the country sharing her presentation of what happened that day in 1945. Please plan to set time aside on Monday May 29th to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
